What is HSM?
HSM (Hyperstructure Hypermedia) is a philosophy on information, based on the idea that information formats and structures should work together, that users should own their data, and that our applications should represent information with the nuance of human thought.
We bring this philosophy to life via our application, Coeus, our personal server, Envoy (soon to be released), and the network of Envoys and the material published on them, the Hypercosm.
What is the difference between HSM and the Web?
In terms of design, the Web takes the idea of a document and puts it online. It combines this with a concept of a hyperlink, based on storing the address in the document where the link exists, meaning that links are always “one way.”
HSM takes a more generalized and, we hope, human approach.
- Where the fundamental unit of information for the Web is the document, in HSM it can be anything: a word, a sentence, a collection of articles; such things can be nested one within the other, but are always uniquely identified.
- Links follow the same rule, and are therefore uniquely-identified, first-class objects.
- Where on the Web, any server stores its own and only its own material, on the Hypercosm, servers store their information plus a segment of information belonging to the community, such as links between users.
